The Roman army in Britain left an archaeological legacy that is the envy of the rest of the Roman world. The forts, fortresses and frontier defences are rightly celebrated, but less well known are the temporary camps. These were constructed to house the army for short periods of time while on campaigns, patrols and manoeuvres.
As the northern frontier zone of Britain, subject to repeated campaigns by the Roman army, the area possesses a wide and fascinating range of camp sites recorded both as earthwork remains and through cropmarkings from the air. The field evidence is discussed against the background of Roman army campaigns, with each of the camps described and illustrated in a detail gazetteer.
The book is illustrated throughout with plans, maps and photographs and will be of interest to all those who wish to know more about the archaeology of the Roman army, its campaigns in northern Britain and the ancient military mind.
Rebecca H Jones is Keeper of Scottish History and Archaeology at National Museums Scotland. She is a graduate of the Universities of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Glasgow, and her research work has focused on archaeological research on Roman frontiers in northern Britain, historiography of Roman frontier scholarship in the 20th century and world heritage.
